I have heard that people who seek counseling or consult with psychologists are “crazy” or “deranged” (in Filipino, nababaliw, sira ulo, loko loko). Is it true?
It is sad that many people may think this way. Usually, there is a stigma attached to those who see psychologists and psychiatrists. This is why many individuals refuse to seek help. It is possible that some individuals manifest emotional outbursts or hurtful behaviors toward themselves and others, which thus greatly affect their relationships. More people have become aware how psychologists can help them through their crises or life transitions thus, they become willing to seek professional help. Individuals who see psychologists can obtain help or guidance in handling stress, taking control of their behaviors and feelings, and in managing their relationships more effectively, so they can restore their sense of well-being.
My child is having learning problems. The teachers say that my child needs to undergo a psychological evaluation. What is that? A doctor referred my child for a psychological evaluation. What is that?
Psychological evaluations make use of a battery of standardized intelligence and personality tests to assess a person’s knowledge, skills, present emotional states, and personality.
The set of tests may be helpful in identifying an individual’s learning difficulties, strengths and weaknesses, emotional needs, and coping style. Interviews and observations supplement the assessment procedure.
What is the difference between psychological evaluation, neuropsychological assessment, and psycho-educational tests?
These are various specialized ways that psychological evaluations are done. They can be done by psychologists who have specialized training in specific areas, such as neuropsychology and education. Sometimes, the same instruments or subtests of certain tools can be used in a psychological or neuropsychological evaluation. However, the objective or the slant of the report differs. Psychoeducational reports are geared towards educational implications; neuropsychological reports indicate a neurological or biological basis of behavior and psychological reports are conducted to obtain a profile of individuals’ overall functioning, including their intellectual, academic achievement, and socio-emotional functioning.
What is informed consent? What does it mean when I (as a parent/ guardian or adult) sign a contract of agreement for the services I obtain from your clinic?
During the first consultation, the psychologist will discuss with you the recommended psychological service or treatment to be received. He/she will also explain the contents of an informed consent form, identifying clauses of ethics and confidentiality, payment of professional fees, consultation with allied professionals (if applicable), and the termination process. This form serves as a contract of agreement between the professional and the client.
I’m married or in a relationship and want to seek consultation about relationship problems. I want my spouse (or partner) to undergo couples/ marital therapy with me but he/ she refuses to do so. What can I do?
You can come for individual consultation first. The psychologist may suggest for you to undergo individual therapy to address your relationship concerns. We cannot force your spouse or partner to come for marital/ couples therapy if he/she is unwilling to do so. You and your spouse or partner can come for marital/ couples therapy when both of you are willing to do so.
Do you appear in court for cases of marital annulment (declaration of nullity of marriage) or child custody?
Currently, we don’t. Our reports are not written for court purposes. However, psychiatrists usually refer clients to us for psychological evaluation. We conduct the psychological evaluation and after obtaining the client’s written consent, we send the report to the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist may or may not use our evaluation to substantiate their own assessment.
